I wonder what the etiquette is for writing a companion piece to someone else’s fanfic, when you don’t see any publicly available way of contacting the writer of the original story to ask for permission.

I agree that comments like these on fics are just pointless. If you’re going to be a bitch about something you don’t like, try and at least give some constructive feedback on why you didn’t like it. If your reason for not liking it is simply a difference in taste, then you should have just stopped reading the story the moment you figured out it wasn’t for you.

However, and mostly for my own peace of mind, I want to point out that as I understand it, OOC isn’t a term used solely in RP. Now, I have been out of the fanfic writing business for some time, but I seem to remember OOC was used back in the day to signify characters that are behaving in ways that do not go together with how their canon selves would. AU was just the term for taking characters out of their canon environment, and placing them in a new situation their original creators never intended for them to be in. Technically, characters can then still be OOC even when written in an AU story, because you’d expect characters to still behave in a way that is reasonably in line with what we know of them through original source material.

Perhaps things have changed though, and maybe OOC is now just the term for RPers who break character to speak their own minds. In any case, I thought the comment left on the fic was pretty pointless, and as someone who has been looking to get back into putting out some of the stories I write when no one is looking, this just goes to show it’s still the same shit in fandoms across the board, even years later.

Kudos to writers everywhere dealing with rude reviewers like this. Never let it stop you from writing what’s on your mind and in your heart.
